Rochester Selectmen discuss solar project

Aug 12, 2019

ROCHESTER — Though experts could not attend the Aug. 12 Board of Selectmen meeting to present on a proposed solar project, Selectmen gave some details of the project themselves and resolved to get more information at a later meeting.

The project would place solar panels at Rochester Memorial School, which would yield the town $30,000 in savings, and at the Highway Department barn, Selectman Woody Hartley explained.

Solect Energy, a Hopkinton-based company who will handle all aspects of the project, including engineering, at no cost to the town, also plans to enter into a Payment in lieu of taxes (or PILOT) agreement with the town.

Though the proposed panels at the barn would not yield as much in savings, Hartley was still in favor of them.

“There’s enough savings to consider it because there’s no cost to us,” Hartley said, adding that the panels also presented “no risk to us.”

Selectmen plan to attend the Rochester School Committee meeting on Sept. 5 to hear a presentation about the panels and learn more.
