A Wednesday morning incident on a boat in Mattapoisett Harbor resulted in a man being taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. At least one official said the boater was declared dead.

Details of what happened and the outcome remain murky.

On Wednesday, a local official who asked not to be named, said there was a fatality in what appeared to be a "boating mishap."

On Thursday afternoon, Mattapoisett Police Chief Mary Lyons responded to an e-mail request for information with a short statement that a man suffered a "cardiac event" while on a sailboat in Mattapoisett on Wednesday.

According to Lyons, the man was transported from Pico Beach Road to St. Luke's Hospital. The chief, while neither confirming nor denying the man’s death, said no other information was available at this time.

The Coast Guard did not return calls for information.
