School district names new assistant superintendent

Oct 23, 2019

Michael Nelson, the former director of student services at Old Rochester Regional School District was named assistant superintendent of teaching, learning and student services at a School Committee meeting on Oct. 23.

Former Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Elise Frangos retired at the end of last school year. After intense study, administrators decided to leave her position open for a year to further discern what the district needed.

In June of last year Superintendent Douglas White announced that he would retire in June 2020. The central office had originally intended for the new superintendent to be able to choose an assistant.

However, with the central office also out a business administrator, there was a clear need to “have a clear position when the superintendent is out that can weigh in.”

The committee clarified that the curriculum duties that Frangos had taken on in the past would not be taken on to the same degree by Nelson, though other administrators are currently splitting her duties.

In response to the promotion, Nelson said,  “I appreciate the support of the district and Superintendent. I will continue to serve the district to the best of my abilities.”
