Scouts donate a ton of toys to Gifts to Give
Hoping to make the holiday season a memorable one for children in need, the Cub Scouts of Pack 32 collected a ton of goods – literally.
On Dec. 8, the Scouts dropped off 2,000 pounds of toys, clothing and household items following a charity drive for Gifts to Give.
“This is the most donations we’ve collected since starting four years ago,” said Lisa Baltz, the leader of the pack’s Webelos den. “We had lots of Scouts and parents bring donations and volunteer to clean and sort toys and prepare the donations.”
Baltz said the Pack’s drive has grown larger and more successful each year.
“There are over 2,500 homeless children and 25,000 children living in poverty on the South Coast. [Jim Stevens], the founder and CEO of Gifts to Give, has created a way to recycle toys, books and clothing to help these children in need,” Baltz said.
When the drive began, many of the Scouts were in first grade. Baltz said the drive helps to teach the boys the importance of giving to others.
“Now that they’re older they understand that they’re giving back to their community,” she said. Gifts to Give is a nonprofit that accepts children’s items that is then recycled and gifted to those in need.
Located for many years in New Bedford, the organization recently moved to Titleist Drive in Acushnet.
