MARION — The Sippican Lands Trust will take a walk with Moe Molander to search for a prize in a scavenger-hunt type activity on Oct. 5 at 10 a.m.
Geocaches, or caches are logs and sometimes small collections of items to be traded that are hidden at locations marked by coordinates. Geocachers use a GPS to find the cache, and either sign the log with a code name or leave a small toy or trinket of sentimental value in the cache (often a tupperware container, or other waterproof container) before hiding it again in the same spot.
The Lands Trust will host a series of geocache hunts starting Oct. 5 at Peirson Woods. All ages are invited, including families, the young at heart and those seeking a work-life balance.
The walk will begin a with a basic introduction until 10:30 a.m. followed by a hunt at Pierson Woods for a few hidden caches. The group will also practice “Cache In and Trash Out,” picking up any litter and trash on the walk to the next target.
Participants should have a fully-charged smart phone with the free Geocaching app from Groundspeak (no subscription is required for basic access), wear appropriate footwear and layers, bring insect repellent and extra water.
Parking for Peirson Woods is located just off of Point Road approximately 1.4 miles south of the intersection of Route 6 (Wareham Road) and Point Road in Marion (41.711057, -70.744728).
Parking spaces for the free walk are very limited. No registration is required. If the walk is canceled due to inclement weather, information will be posted to Lands Trust’s website and Facebook page.
