Selectman questions repairs at Rochester Memorial School

Rochester Selectmen Chair Richard Nunes is questioning how repairs are done at the elementary school, and has submitted a public records request to the Old Rochester Regional School District to get additional information.

Earlier this month, Nunes sent a letter to Superintendent Doug White requesting more information about the maintenance at Rochester Memorial School. Nunes said his actions were in response to concerns from parents about repairs not being addressed in a timely manner.

White responded with reports and invoices for repairs done at the school in the last year.

Included in the invoices were reports of a damaged water pump as well as a fire pump sensor that had been recalled. School officials discovered the sensor on a routine inspection in July. The sensor was not replaced until months later, Nunes said during last week’s Selectmen meeting.

“This is not a soap dispenser being out of soap. This is something that prevents fires, and it wasn’t promptly fixed,” Nunes said.

White said the necessary repairs were addressed.

“It takes time to find replacement parts, get those parts to the building, and put in place,” White said.

Now, Nunes is requesting additional documents detailing the maintenance needs at the school.

“People think we’re being picky, but the town spent $25 million in additional renovations to the school. Although we’re not in charge of the school, we have a duty to the taxpayers. When you have a majority of items not being repaired, it’s an issue. It’s disconcerting,” Nunes said.

White said he received Nunes’ request on Tuesday and would work on gathering the necessary reports.

Of the maintenance at the school, White said, “It’s been nothing unusual. We have a new building that we retrofitted with the old building. There are going to be upgrades and a few things that need to be monitored and make changes.”

Additionally, Nunes said he would like to set up a meeting with White, the Rochester School Committee, and Gene Jones, Facilities Director for the school district.
