Selectmen, homeowners question electrical poles

Jan 13, 2016

At Tuesday night’s Selectmen meeting, River Road residents Cathy Jackie and Tom Grondski expressed concern over two new poles proposed by Eversource.

The new poles, stub poles that would secure electrical poles on the opposite side of the street and prepare the way for upgrades, would be placed in front of the couple’s home – one in front of a sign for the daylily business the pair runs and another to the side of their driveway.

“I’m sure they could come up with a better location,” said Jackie. “I don’t want it directly in front of our house or two feet off our driveway.”

Selectmen asked Eversource representative Donna Rosa about the specifics of the locations and the wires that would be required.

She was unclear if the poles would need a sidewalk wire or if guy-wires would suffice.

Selectmen also asked if the poles could be placed in another location. In addition to the potential obstruction of the couples’ property, one of the poles is proposed for an area that has seen its share of traffic accidents due to a sharp bend in the road.

Grondski said, on average, two cars hit their stone wall every year.

“The pole is probably going to be hit more than twice a year. That’s not a good spot safetywise to put a pole,” he said.

Selectmen continued the hearing with Eversource until the electricity company could review the site and determine different placement of the poles as well as provide specific information about what wires would be required to secure the installations. They suggested consulting with Jackie and Grondski and asked that sidewalk wires not be used if possible.

The continuance is scheduled for Jan. 26.
