Selectmen seat only contested race in Rochester
Two candidates are vying for one seat on the Rochester Board of Selectmen in the upcoming Town Election on April 10.
Incumbent Brad Morse will seek his third, three-year term on the board. Previously, Morse served on the Planning Board for 12 years.
"I just want to keep working for the townspeople," Morse said. "I want to keep the town running in a responsible way."
Michael Murphy, the owner of Murphy's Auto Salvage, is challenging Morse. Murphy has previously served as a Selectman in town and ran unsuccessfully for the board in 2010.
A resident of Rochester for 44 years, Murphy has also served on the Finance Committee and is currently serving on the Planning Board.
Of his decision to run for the Board of Selectmen, Murphy said, "At this time, I just wanted to get more involved in town politics. I have nothing against Brad Morse, I've known him a long time, but I thought I could give the people a second choice."
As for Election Day, Town Clerk Naida Parker said contested races generally determine how many people show up at the polls.
"A Selectmen race usually generates the most interest," Parker said.
Residents can register to vote at the Town Clerk's office until March 21.
