Selectmen seek service-minded candidates for Conservation Commission

Sep 23, 2015

Selectmen are looking to fill several seats on the Conservation Commission and interviewed one potential member on Tuesday.

Richard Francis said he has been in town for more than three decades and has spent the last several years working in excavation. While he admitted to not knowing a lot about the wetlands protection act, he said he wants to help others who come before the commission “navigate the process easier.”

When he first came before the Conservation Commission for his job, Francis admitted, “I was a little intimidated by the whole process.”

Selectman Paul Silva asked Francis to define the role of the commission.

“I want to be able to make it pretty much as simple as possible for them,” Francis said of applicants. “I’d like to see people be a little more educated.”

Silva was satisfied with the answer.

“That’s exactly what I feel. The board as a whole, I believe, their job is to assist the resident and not be a hindrance to them and make them jump through hoops.

Chair Jordan Collyer said he was refreshed by Francis’ answer.

“At the end of the day, it’s customer service.”

Selectmen still have an additional candidate interested in appointment to the commission who was not able to attend the meeting.
