September events at the Mattapoisett Museum

MATTAPOISETT – The Mattapoisett's Weird & Wonderful Summer Exhibit will only be around for a few more weeks. Inspired by the idea of a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ – a concept dating back to the 16th century – this exhibit will features and curious items from the collection, many of which have never been displayed.

The exhibition highlights the breadth and variety of the museum’s collection. Admission is free for members, $8 for non-members, and kids get in free.

On September 10 at 1 p.m., New Bedford Harbor Sea Chanty Chorus The New Bedford Harbor Sea Chantey Chorus will visit. The chorus is one of the most harmonious crews to come ashore. Their repertoire of work songs of Yankee sailors and whalers reflects the region's rich maritime heritage.

This 24-voice group sings ballads and ditties of global mariners and coastwise fisherfolk in North America, the Cape Verde Islands and the British Isles. Be ready to have fun and learn how to "rant and roll like a true-born sailor.” NBHSCC is a volunteer group of the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey. There is a $5 suggested donation to attend. This event will be held outdoors, and you will need to bring your own chair.

On September 16 at 7 p.m., Southcoast Lessons will present open mic night for all ages, all genres, and it will be all-inclusive. This event is free to attend.

Sept. 17 is Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day Museum Day. This is a one-day event in which participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. There is no Silent Movie or Old Time Fiddle Session in September.
