Sign removal in Mattapoisett – is it censorship?

Jun 4, 2020

To the Editor:

This pandemic has affected all of our lives, but none more than African Americans. As of May 11, African Americans made up 13% of the population, but account for 27% of the deaths! You take these alarming statistics as a backdrop to the brutal murder of George Floyd and we have all seen what is happening.

On a recent walk I was very pleased to see signs posted on trees and utility poles showing support for the end of racism in this country. Some were hand written others typed; some said “I Can’t Breathe” others said “Black Lives Matter.”  What a great, positive, thought-provoking message was being displayed — until they were all removed. I was told that the town took them down, which is very disturbing to me.

Over the years we have all seen signs posted for bake sales, car washes, yard sales, movie nights, plant sales, Teen Dances, Harbor Days, lost dogs or cats, and road races and I have never seen the Highway Department care to take any of those signs down. Why these signs?! Who ordered them removed? Is this a new policy aimed at the beautification of the neighborhood or is this censorship?!?  How could the town not support these actions of its citizens? Instead of taking down these posters, the town should encourage more of us to peacefully voice our opinions.

If you are disturbed by these recent events please join your friends and neighbors this Friday at the Park n’ Ride at noon and March in support of ending racism!

Thank you,
Donald Bamberger
