Silvershell Summer Program welcomes new director

There’s more to the Silvershell Summer Program than fun and games, said the program’s new director, Jill Pittman.

For Pittman, it’s also about providing access to kids, who despite living near the ocean, might not have many chances to enjoy it.

The program’s popular sailing and swimming lessons allow for just that.

“Some of them are growing up around here but never get a chance to go out on a boat,” Pittman said. “And it’s wonderful to see a kid go from not knowing how to stay afloat to swimming.”

The program, now in its fifth year, wrapped up nine weeks of activities on Aug. 21. The program is under the direction of the Marion Recreation Department, where Pittman works as an administrative assistant when the program isn’t in session.

Born and raised in Marion, Pittman had worked at Silvershell Beach as a lifeguard in high school and college. She also has deep ties with the town. Her mother served as a Selectman and her grandfather was harbormaster and shellfish officer for years.

“So I’ve come back home,” Pittman said.

Each week featured a different theme and corresponding field trip. One week, kids celebrated sports and traveled a Pawtucket Red Sox game in Rhode Island.

“The summer went beautifully,” Pittman said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better one.”

The program attracts kids from different populations and it’s popular with summer and year-round residents as well as with those visiting town for a week or two.

This year, all of the previous counselors returned and three new ones were hired to accommodate the growing program.

“They have done an outstanding job for us. When you have great people on the staff the program really shines,” she said.

Throughout the summer, counselors led kids on nature walks, arts and crafts, sports and games and many more activities.

Also, Pittman said she partnered with the Old Rochester Regional School district’s summer session program, known as SAIL (Summer Adventures In Learning).

After classes, SAIL participants headed to Silvershell Beach in the afternoon.

“It’s been a fantastic summer,” Pittman said.
