Sippican Historical Society lecture: Vencedor

Sep 22, 2021

MARION — The Sippican Historical Society Speaker Series will continue on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. with a lecture from Charles A. Poekel Jr. on the yacht Vencedor

The lecture will be the story of Vecendor, an account of not just a racing sailboat storied for its exploits and victories, but of the man who built it — a young Danish-American naval engineer, Thorvald S. Poekel.

Vencedor would distinguish itself in a series of highly competitive races between the United States and Canada on what was called “the great unsalted sea” – the Great Lakes.

Vencedor, a 63-foot cutter, was built in Wisconsin by the Racine Boat Manufacturing Company, which had hired Poekel away from the renowned Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island, where he had been chief draftsman.

Charles A.Poekel Jr. is an attorney, historian, and writer. He is Chairman of the Elisha Kent Kane Historical Society of New York City, a former member of the New Jersey State Historical Commission, and a member of the Maritime Society of America and the Association of Yachting Historians His other books are “West Essex and Babe & The Kid: The Legendary Story of Babe Ruth” and “Johnny Sylvester.” Together with his wife Lynn and flame point Himalayan, Mr. Whiskers, he spends his time between Marion, Massachusetts and Palm Beach, Florida. He is the great-grandson of Thorvald Julius Schougaard Poekel.
