Sippican School students 'think pink' to fight cancer
The students of Sippican School didn't only think pink on Friday, they also dressed in it.
The fourth grade students and teachers initiated the elementary school's first "Think Pink" school spirit day, encouraging everyone to bring at least one dollar to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation's efforts to cure breast cancer.
"Some kids stayed in from recess and made posters," said fourth grader Natalya Rivera.
Classmate William Baltz added, "We also did a lot of announcements on the loud speaker, and we handed out slips of paper to every classroom telling everyone to wear pink today."
Kids and teachers donned pink wigs, dyed their hair pink, wore hot pink leggings, t-shirts, and any other pink accessory they owned.
At an all school assembly Friday morning, Principal Lyn Rivet and Assistant Principal Sarah Goerges showed up wearing almost no pink. There was only one thing to be done. "Makeover!" yelled all the students.
Once they were appropriately covered in pink, and the assembly was over, the fourth graders visited classrooms to collect bags filled with donations.
Many of the fourth grade students said they wanted to help because they knew a family member who had breast cancer. They also wanted to make a difference in the lives of people around the world suffering with the disease.
"I thought it was for a good cause, and I thought if we collected enough money, next year or maybe even this year we could make a cure for breast cancer," said Nathaniel Bangs. "And I like pink!"
Damon Smead also said, "It could change the world."
Teacher Nicole Radke said she was proud of how the students took initiative and got the school ready for the spirit day. Radke and fellow fourth grade teachers MJ Menezes, Kim Souza, and Courtney Sheehan helped students count the money.
Once all the donations were tallied, Radke reported that students gave just over $1300.
"Think Pink was a huge success!"
