Sippican students get a lesson in motion
Sippican School students were put to work on Friday morning with an interactive presentation by the Boston Museum of Science.
Emily Pease, a traveling programs educator with the museum, helped kids understand the three laws of motion with her program "Motion: Force and Work."
Pease said the basic formula to remember is "work = force x distance."
To demonstrate the laws, she did a number of experiments, including propelling a cart attached to a bungee cord forward with a kid on it, shooting balls out of a tube, and smashing a balloon with a simple machine. Student volunteers helped with each demonstration.
The grand finale was lifting a teacher three feet off the ground with a simple machine.
Fourth grade teacher Nicole Radke volunteered and chose her son Shane to try the feat. He also got muscle power from peer Nate Robertson and, with some help from Pease, who extended the length of the lever, they were able to get the job done.
The hour-long event was sponsored by VASE (Volunteers at Sippican Elementary School.)
