Aug 19, 2014

Following an undefeated regular season, Marion’s Sippican Tennis Club 18 and Under team will once again represent all of New England in the National Championship this October.

This is the second time in four years the team will compete nationally.

Under the coaching of Chick Renfrew, the team represented eastern Massachusetts at the New England Championships held at Amherst College on Aug. 13 and 14.

Facing stiff competition, Team Sippican played against the best players from Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and western Massachusetts.

On day one, Sippican played against Maine and western Massachusetts. Out of a possible 40 games to win, Sippican collected 38 and 32 against the teams, respectively. At the end of the day, Sippican trailed Vermont by eight games.

Sippican started day two strong, earning a perfect 40 games against New Hampshire. Next, the team faced Connecticut and secured 36 more games.

In the last match against Vermont, Sippican trailed by nine games. To become New England champions, Sippican not only had to win the match, but also had to win by enough games to overcome an early deficit.

Oliver Kendall and Victoire Keane won their singles matches, and then played again at mixed doubles and took home another win.

As the final scores were tallied, Sippican took 33 games and Vermont took 23. It was enough to give Sippican the championship by a one-game margin.

In the regular season, Sippican posted a record of 6-0 against teams from Lakeville, Fairhaven and Easton.

To win the eastern Massachusetts title, Sippican beat teams from Franklin and Salem earlier in the summer.

Caroline Godfrey partnered with Henry Godfrey and Parker Tonissi at mixed doubles. Victoire Keane played girls singles while Oliver Kendall played boys singles. Owen and Ollie Sughrue played boys doubles.
