Small groups equals big business for Boutique Fitness
The co-owners of Boutique Fitness want clients focused on their workouts, not working out how to achieve goals inside an impersonal gym.
Earlier this month, Lara Harrington and Angela Corrieri-Johnson opened a new fitness studio in the Ropewalk plaza, located at 33 County Road. Boutique Fitness offers personalized sessions to groups of four or less.
“I think people like it because it frees up some mental space,” said Corrieri-Johnson. “They don’t walk into a gym feeling overwhelmed trying to figure out what to do.”
The 950-square foot space is a satellite location of their downtown New Bedford studio. In 2012, the duo launched their business in the city.
When the small group sessions proved increasingly popular, Corrieri-Johnson said expansion became necessary.
“It’s our most popular program, and we were just bursting at the seams,” she said. “We weren’t necessarily looking to open in Mattapoisett, but when this location became available we couldn’t say no.”
Inside Boutique Fitness clients have access to a variety of equipment.
Free weights, kettlebells, a free motion dual cable cross machine, sandbags and more are used for strength training.
Clients are coached through a half-hour workout, usually two or three times a week, that hits all the major muscle groups.
“Very rarely are people asking for more after the thirty minutes,” said Corrieri-Johnson.
Clients find the intimate class sizes, coupled with a cozy workout studio, appealing.
“It’s semi-private personal training,” Corrieri-Johnson said. “You still have the attention of a coach to make sure your form is on point.”
Since opening, approximately 50 people have signed up at the Mattapoisett location.
Corrieri-Johnson said customers range from fitness novices to those looking for something new.
“We’re not just for beginners,” said Corrieri-Johnson. “We’re also here for people who have always worked out, but are looking for something new or who feel unmotivated lately.”
Prospective clients are given a complimentary fitness consultation if interested in joining.
Prior to launching Boutique Fitness in New Bedford, Harrington managed a similar business in Barrington, Rhode Island.
After a while, Harrington decided she wanted to go into business for herself. She asked longtime friend Corrieri-Johnson to join her, and she agreed.
“I was a stay at home mom at the time but we both have always shared an interest in fitness,” Corrieri-Johnson said.
The New Bedford residents found success at their first location. Boutique Fitness New Bedford offers a running program, nutrition classes and individual training in addition to small group classes. Soon after opening, they moved into a larger space next door.
As they settle into their location, Corrieri-Johnson said she and Harrington are grateful for the community support.
“We love the South Coast,” she said.
