Snow, ice take down garage on Route 6

Mar 4, 2015

Snow and ice were too much for an old garage at 85 Marion Road (Route 6) that collapsed on Wednesday morning.

Neighbor Mike King notified authorities of the collapse.

“The building hadn’t been used in years. The roof hadn’t been cleaned off from the snow and ice,” said Fire Chief Andrew Murray.

Firefighters checked the scene for fuel and gas hazards, but found none. The structure did pull down power lines connected to it, though power to the building was turned off. It did not affect electricity in the area. Eversource (formerly NSTAR) was also called in to check the lines.

According to Murray, Building Inspector Andy Bobola visited the site and declared the building condemned. He ordered the owner, listed as A Trustee of Lucia Letendre by assessors, to tear down what was left of the structure. The property also includes a vacant house.

Murray said his department has been called to examine other structures in town with ice dams and leaks, but the garage is the only building that has collapsed as a result of snow and ice.
