FALMOUTH — A student from Mattapoisett was recognized by a state senator for a project focused on protecting piping plovers, an endangered bird species.

Zoë Van Keuren, a 9th grade student at Falmouth Academy from Mattapoisett, and four other students who worked on the project were awarded citations by state senator Susan Moran during an April 9 school meeting.

The project included measures aimed at mitigating threats to the shorebirds, like leashing dogs and promoting the cleanup of trash on beaches.

“By providing clear guidelines for tourists and visitors, which are vital to the Cape's economy, the project underscores the importance of environmental conservation in supporting the region's economic well-being,” a Falmouth Academy press release said.

In February, the class toured the Massachusetts State House and met with Moran and state representative Dylan Fernandes.

“These conversations highlighted the critical role of young people in tackling environmental challenges, with an emphasis on the significance of including youth perspectives in the legislative process,” a Falmouth Academy press release said.
