Student suggests Mattapoisett monument for NASA Chief Engineer
NASA Chief Engineer from 1983 to 1986 and Mattapoisett native Milton Silveira will soon have a spot at Ned’s Point dedicated to him, and it’s all thanks to local student Alex Craig.
On Tuesday night, Alex spoke with Selectmen about his proposal to put a plaque and bench in the area to honor Silveira, who passed away last July. An aerospace engineer, Silveira was involved in the space shuttle programs of Apollo, Mercury and Gemini.
Alex had a phone interview with Silveira before his death for a third grade report he wrote. After his death, Silveira’s daughter found an email from Alex, contacted him and gave him a coin that had been in space.
“I thought it would be nice to make a memorial site,” said Alex. “His daughter is willing to pay a thousand dollars for a bench, trees, a plaque, maybe a monument.”
He added, “We’ll do fundraising not use tax money.”
Selectmen were all in favor of the monument.
Selectman Jordan Collyer suggested that Alex go with a member of the board and the Town Administrator to pick out a spot.
