Tabor girls hockey takes 13th win, boys fall in Travis Roy Cup tournament
Tabor Academy’s girls varsity ice hockey team claimed its fourth straight win this weekend.
The Seawolves defeated St. Mark’s School of Southborough 3-1. Tabor took the lead early in the game and managed to hold onto to it until the end. The Seawolves scored the first goal in the first two minutes and kept St. Mark’s from scoring until late in the game.
The team’s latest win brought its overall regular season record to 13-3-2. The girls will next face off with Phillips Academy on February 6 in a home game at 3:15 p.m.
The boys varsity A hockey team suffered a setback in the 17th annual Travis Roy Cup against St. Sebastian’s School of Needham. The Seawolves lost a close game in Needham with a final score of 3-2.
Last year, Tabor emerged victorious with its ninth win in the event’s history. Named in honor of Tabor alum Travis Roy, the Cup is an annual game against St. Sebastian’s. Roy played hockey for Tabor and then went on to join Boston University’s hockey team in 1995.
Five months into his career with the University, Roy slid headfirst into the boards during a game against the University of North Dakota. Roy cracked his fourth and fifth vertebra, which left him paralyzed from the neck down.
In 1997, Roy established the Travis Roy Foundation to help raise money for spinal cord injury research. To date, Tabor and St. Sebastian’s have raised more than $100,000 for Roy’s foundation, said Marthe Soden, an assistant in the Tabor’s Athletics Department.
