Thursday, August 5
Audition for a play
The Marion Art Center will host open auditions for all roles in the upcoming production of “Steel Magnolias,” written by Robert Harling and directed by Jennifer Palmer.

Auditions will be Aug. 5 from 5 to 6 p.m. and Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Only actors fully vaccinated for covid will be considered for roles.

Learn about turtles
On August 5 at 10:30 am, it’s Turtle Time at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library. The New England Coastal Wildlife Association will make a kid-friendly presentation about turtles. The presentation will be followed by crafts and activities. Online registration is required.

Friday, August 6
Enjoy ice cream and music at the library
On August 6 at 10:30 am, Backyard Jams will join the Mattapoisett Free Public Library’s summer reading challenge with an interactive concert for the whole family. Ice cream cups and popsicles will be available.

The library’s summer reading raffle prizes will be distributed after our morning concert. If you would like to be part of our final summer reading raffle, you must complete our reading program challenge by Thursday, August 5.

Everyone is welcome to attend, no registration necessary. Funded by the Friends of the Mattapoisett Library with additional prizes given by the Oxford Creamery.

Summer Members’ Show at the MAC
The Marion Art Center’s Summer Members’ Show starts this week, running August 6 through September 3, with an opening reception on Friday, August 6 from 5-7 p.m. Visit the Marion Art Center to view works by a talented group of MAC members.

Most works are available for purchase. The galleries are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Any Marion Art Center member is invited to participate in two members’ shows each year – one in winter and one in summer.

Saturday, August 7
Buy old stuff at the Historical Society yard sale
Join the Rochester Historical Society at the Rochester Historical Museum from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug 7. for a yard sale.
The historical society has an abundance of toys, furniture, lamps, books, crafts, cookware, garden and bird supplies, Christmas items and more.
The museum will also be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sunday, August 8
Root for the home teams
The Embargo Summer Basketball league is holding its playoffs at Silvershell Beach over the weekend with the wildcard round slated for Friday at 5-7 p.m. followed by semi finals on Saturday at the same time. On Sunday, the league will play an all-star game at 5 p.m. followed by a skills contest at 6 p.m. and the finals at 7 p.m.

The Pink, Blue and White teams are all made up of Tri-Town athletes while the Black and Grey teams hail from Fairhaven and Acushnet and the Red team comes from Dartmouth.

Wednesday, August 11
Become Part of a Fish Story!
The Marion Art Center and local restaurant Brew Fish Bar and Eatery are teaming up to create a unique community art project. Participate in one of two Paint and Sip events to paint your own fun and colorful fish that will be a part of the mural.

Your uniquely designed fish will be viewed as part of this wall sculpture for years to come, located in the outdoor beer garden at Brew Fish.

Participants can choose from two dates: Wednesday, August 11, 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Brew Fish or Friday, August 20, 4-6 p.m. at the MAC.

All supplies will be provided, including a wine tasting, compliments of Brew Fish.
