Three Gateway teams make Yankee Conference Championship

Mar 25, 2015

Three Gateway teams have made the Yankee Conference Championship after wins this past week.

Pee Wees

In their second playoff game against Hanover, the their opponents came out strong with two goals in the first eight minutes of the game, but Wareham came out on top 5-3.

Gateway was able to focus and come back on two goals by Ben DeMoranville.

Hanover got one more goal late in the second to go on top again, but the third period was all Gateway with goals by Jack Martins, RJ Vickery and a third from Ben DeMoranville, which earned him his first hat trick of the season.

The Gladiators followed that win with another, qualifying them for the league championship.

Bantams

The Gateway Gladiators earned the top seed in the Yankee Conference Bantam division championship after skating to a 3-3 tie with the Canton Bulldogs.

Both Zachary Pateakos and Steven Strachan played well in net for the Gladiators, but lack of consistent hustle and basic execution continue to be problematic for their team.

As a result, their early two-goal lead melted away as Canton simply outskated Gateway. Zachary Lovendale, Robert Ramsay, and Josh Smolinsky each had goals for the Gladiators, while Noah Demoranville earned an assist. Smolinsky and Lovendale were also credited with helpers. The championship game will see Gateway facing off against either the Pembroke Titans or WHK Hawks at the Hobomock Arena on April 4 at 4:20pm.

Middle School 1

The Middle School 1 Jr. Vikings closed out their regular season schedule with a tough, 4-2, loss to Mansfield Graham. The Jr. Vikings got behind early by one, but caught a break when Zack Lovendale bounced a goal in off the back of the goalie, assisted by Wylde LaTulippe and Quirino doCanto.

With the score tied, Lovendale scored again after some nice passing from his brother Tyler and doCanto again. Going into the third period, things looked good with a 2-1 lead, but the Jr. Vikings came out flat and quickly gave up the lead and found themselves trailing by a goal. They couldn't quite get their bearings and ended up giving up another goal in the third.

Alex DeMarco played well in net, making numerous saves in the loss. The Middle School 1 team will start their playoffs next weekend in hopes to make it to the Championship.

The Squirts and Pee Wees play Saturday, March 28, with times to-be-determined.
