Tired of 'bundling'? Weigh-in on Comcast cable contract, Sept. 11

Aug 28, 2012

Tired of the ubiquitous “bundling” craze that’s become the buzzword of cable television companies?

Soon, Mattapoisett Comcast cable customers and citizens will have a chance to voice their opinions on service to Selectmen.

Town Administrator Mike Gagne said, “We’ve had complaints about bundling, and we want to see if we can get a more à la carte sort of programming.”

Gagne said local residents have also requested a change in the network stations. Comcast currently provides the major national networks, namely ABC, CBS, and NBC, through Providence. Gagne said many people feel more connected to Boston and want to see the news and other special programs from there.

A hearing on September 11 will give citizens an opportunity to express what they’d like to see, said Gagne. He said approximately 1,600 households in the town use Comcast.

Although the current contract with Comcast doesn’t expire until 2014, Gagne said it will take Selectmen four to five months to draft a proposal for the cable provider based on residents’ feedback.

“Mattapoisett is in a pretty nice position because we have two cable companies,” said Gagne, referencing Verizon. “Not many municipalities have a choice.”

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in the Mattapoisett Library.
