Town honors library building committee members for 'tireless efforts'

Three members of the building committee that spearheaded the major renovation of the Mattapoisett Library were honored on Tuesday.

Robert Cattley, Francis Gordon and Robert Atkinson were three of the “fearsome foursome” along with Seth Mendel who put their professional expertise to use on the library’s overhaul that included a new wing on the historic building.

“The new library was really their mission,” said Library Director Susan Pizzolato. “They each brought their skill set to the project with a passion that made it possible.”

Gordon and Cattley, both engineers, used their backgrounds in construction and building management while Atkinson and Mendell took charge of the capital campaign to raise funds for the project.

The committee members collaborated with then-director Judy Wallis, fielded questions from the public, sought out grants, spoke at Town Meetings and private fundraising as well as seeing the project from concept through construction.

“They weren’t going to let things fall where they may,” said Board of Trustee Chair Mary Magee.

Pizzolato said the men continued to work tirelessly when she came on board as did other members of the Building Committee, including clerk Betty Theriault.

“They’ve been a pleasure to work with,” said Pizzolato.

Tuesday’s ceremony was held in the library of the Sippican Healthcare Center and included family members of the three men as well as Pizzolato, Magee, Town Administrator Mike Gagne and the Town Administrator’s Assistant Melody Pacheco.

Gagne praised the men for their “tireless efforts.” They were presented with certificates of appreciation from Selectmen.

In a statement, Gagne said, “Their combined engineering, project management and financial expertise made this project such a reality in Mattapoisett.”
