Tractor pull returns to Rochester Fairgrounds
Janet Kowzic took the simple approach to win the C Stock division of the tractor pull.
"All I know how to do is step on the gas pedal," said Kowzic, a Wareham resident.
That worked well for her on Sunday as she took home her first trophy at the New England Antique Tractor and Truck Association's tractor pull and swap meet at the Rochester Fairgrounds. The event was postponed from Saturday due to bad weather.
Kowzic said at 67 she was the most senior woman competing in the tractor pull.
"I'm the old lady," said the mother of seven whose grandson also brought his tractor to the event.
Kowzic began competing at NEATTA's monthly tractor pulls last year because her husband, Frank, was a long-time competitor.
"My husband has been in it for years and I wanted to do something with him," she said.
Despite dour weather, a number of people came out to compete in everything from antique Cub Cadet lawnmowers to diesel farm tractors.
Teenager Samantha Gagnon of Dighton is a frequent competitor with two pink lawnmowers, both dubbed "Lil Deb" (her mother Deb drives one called "Big Deb.") She said the muddy track made the day start out a little slow.
"Nobody was going anywhere," said Gagnon.
But by mid-afternoon, tractors were going at "full pull."
