Tri-Town basketball tournament sees three winning teams

MATTAPOISETT — While Old Rochester Regional High School’s boys basketball team was making their way to the final four in the Div. 3 state championship, the Mattapoisett Recreation Department hosted a championship of its own in the Tri-Town on Thursday, March 9.

Young basketball players from across the Tri-Town played in three divisions for the title of champion. 

In the boys grade three and four division, team Tide faced off against the Gators. Luke Bienz, playing point guard for Tide had four points in the first quarter and Flynn Carroll had two points for the Gators. Jacob Emery scored four points and Brogan Leary scored two points in a “monster rebound” for Tide in the second quarter. By halftime, the score was 10-4 and in the end, Tide managed to hold onto their lead and won 14-13.

Meanwhile, in the Boys Grade five and six division the Tri-Town Celtics faced the Bulls. The Celtics came out strong in the first quarter with four points from Cam Eitas and two from Drew Gaspar. They rebounded and fought for every loose ball. Addison Cleary scored two points for the Bulls. Ultimately, the Celtics prevailed with a score of 28-18.

Then in the girls division the Friars squared off against the Wolverines. Erin Fahy scored the only bucket in the first quarter for the Wolverines while Ellie Jacobsen scored two and Elsa Pothier scored four in the second quarter. Morgan Tripp got the Friars on the board with two in the second quarter.  The Wolverines were up 8-2 by halftime and continued their winning streak, bringing the score to 10-8.
