Compared to the number of voters who cast ballots in the April primary, residents turned out in a big way for the U.S. Senate Special Election held Tuesday.

Just over 36 percent of Mattapoisett voters came to the polls. Up from the 19 percent of voters who participated in the primary.

Former Navy SEAL and Republican candidate Gabriel Gomez took the most votes with 925 compared to 759 votes for Edward Markey, a sitting congressman and Democratic candidate. Richard Heos received one vote.

Rochester Republicans cast the most votes for Gomez at 777, while Markey netted 372 votes and Heos earned 2 votes.

Twenty eight percent of voters participated in the election, an increase from the number of voters who cast ballots in the town election and primary.

“It’s not a presidential election, but we’ve had a lot of voters come in today,” Rochester Town Clerk Naida Parker said. She noted residents were requesting absentee ballots until the day before the election.

In Marion, 36 percent of voters came to the polls. Gomez received 743 votes to Markey’s 604. Of the three towns, Heos earned the most in Marion, netting 10 votes.
