Two in the running for Mattapoisett Selectman
It’s been a while since there was a race for Selectmen in Mattapoisett, but this May incumbent Jordan Collyer will go up against Tim O’Connor in the town election.
Collyer, who has already been elected for four terms, said there are still some things he would like to see accomplished in town before he steps back from the position.
“We’re in very sound fiscal shape,” he said. “I think things could get even better. It’s kind of an exciting time.”
Collyer anticipates several retirements coming up over the next three years and wants to have a hand in the selection of their successors.
“I think three more years will allow me to serve the town when I think it’s going to be most important,” he said.
For Collyer's opponent, Tim O’Connor, this election will be his first run for Selectmen. O’Connor said he got a taste of local government while working as city auditor in New Bedford and then as associate superintendent of finance for tri-town schools.
“I’m extremely well-versed in finance. I have a good deal of experience in benefit administration and union negotiations,” he said.
O’Connor is confident he would do a good job in the Selectman seat and so he wanted to “throw [his] hat in the ring.”
“If I don’t throw my name out there, nobody’s going to vote for me,” he said.
The town also has a contested race for two seats on the Mattapoisett School Committee with three running: incumbent Patrick LeClair and newcomers Daniel Wright and Rachel Westgate.
Three residents are also running for two positions on the Community Preservation Committee: incumbents Jodi Bauer and John DeCosta Jr. and James Layton.
Additionally, Mike King is running against long time tree warden Roland Cote.
The Mattapoisett town election is May 17. The last day to register to vote is April 19.
