MATTAPOISETT— The Mattapoisett Fire Department responded to a call regarding a fire on an island in Tinkham Pond on Friday, May 12.

According to a Mattapoisett Fire Rescue Facebook post, it was discovered that an island was burning in the middle of the pond.

“Firefighters donned water rescue suits and waded through the water to get to the island,” said the fire department in the post. “Once they arrived on the island, and after carrying pumps, hoses, water cans, rakes, and miscellaneous tools, they worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire.”

According to the post, the fire appears to have been started by an unattended campfire.

“Please use caution and make sure you fully extinguish camp [and] cook fires,” wrote the fire department.
