Under sheets of rain, Old Rochester football season comes to close
MATTAPOISETT — Under endless and cold sheets of rain, Old Rochester Regional High School’s football season came to a close.
The Bulldogs lost 26-14 to Apponequet Regional High School on Thanksgiving Thursday, Nov. 28.
Seniors Jack Leconte and Devin St. Germaine both ran in touchdowns for Old Rochester, who finishes the season at 9-3.
While it was tough not to win on Thanksgiving, Leconte said everyone on the team “kept fighting,” everyone “gave it their all,” and everyone “wanted it” throughout the season.
“We came up short, but we fought hard,” Leconte said. “It’s the best season of football I’ve ever had.”
Leconte also had an interception on defense.
Head coach Bryce Guilbeault said Leconte “finishes runs” and was “great” all year.
“I’m really proud of the way he played offense and defense today,” he said.
With rain incessant, Old Rochester’s grassy field became a soggy stretch of mud as the game continued. The Bulldogs’s bright white pants darkened to brown.
“It sucked — I’m not going to lie — but it made the game exciting at the same time,” Leconte said. “It’s definitely a game that I’ll always remember.”
The Thanksgiving match marks the final high school football game for Old Rochester’s seniors, a “great group,” Guilbeault said.
“We hate to see them leave,” he said. “Really love those kids.”
Old Rochester “had a great year,” Guilbeault said.
The Bulldogs made a run to the Div. 5 state semifinals.
Leconte said the team made a “big jump” offensively from last season.
“Our defense had a lot of stops throughout the whole season,” he said. “Our team was just a compete team this year, and I’m very proud of it.”
