UPDATED: Vehicle crashes into Rochester swamp

ROCHESTER – Rochester emergency services responded to a single vehicle crash on Saturday, Jan. 8 around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Walnut Plain Road and Burgress Avenue. 

According to the Rochester Fire Department, the driver went off-road and landed around 100 feet into a swampy area off Walnut Plain Road.

Following a roadside investigation by Rochester police officers Richard Heslin and Scott Smith, the driver was identified as Kelis Gomes, 18.

She was placed under arrest for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs, said police. 

According to police, she suffered minor injuries and was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. 

Gomes was released on bail and was arraigned on Monday, Jan. 9 at Wareham District Court, said police. 

According to police, her charges include: OUI-drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, minor transporting alcohol, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, open container of marijuana in a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation. 

The car was removed from the swamp following the crash, said the fire department.
