Weather delays solar developers
Not wanting to be left in the dark, the Planning Board met with developers of the Little Quittacas Solar Project to question recent construction at the site.
At issue is the building of a 10-foot high earthen wall, called a berm, designed to block abutter’s view of the solar panels. Trees must also be planted around the installation.
Previously, the wall was set for completion in May.
Planning Board Chair Arnold Johnson said it appeared Real Goods Solar, the project’s management company, finished some aspects of the project, but not others.
Jay Myrto, regional director of Real Goods Solar commercial division, said the project complied with an agreement between the his company and the town. Wet weather and a longer than expected permit process slowed progress.
“Overall, the berm is not going up as fast as we’d like, but we are following the sequence of work,” Myrto said.
Trees were originally set for planting on the wall last month.
The delay pushes back the planting date to September. The project is a compromise between Rochester and the city of New Bedford to address abutters concerned about the site’s appearance. The city owns the site located on North Avenue in Rochester.
The Planning Board approved the solar project in January. The installation will include 14,000 photovoltaic solar panels on a 28.5-acre parcel.
New Bedford representatives hope to complete construction of the solar panels by the end of August.
