West Nile Virus-infected mosquitoes found in Rochester, spraying planned for Wednesday
After mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus were found in Rochester, health officials have issued caution to local residents.
On Friday, the state's Department of Public Health informed the Rochester Board of Health that the infected mosquitoes were found in traps set up around the town.
To help prevent infection, Plymouth County Mosquito Control will be spraying all of Rochester on Wednesday at no extra cost to the town.
While there have been no cases of residents contracting the virus, Health Director Karen Walega said that people should be extra vigilant.
Since the summer began, Walega said there have been recorded cases of people infected with the virus in nearby towns such as Middleboro.
With school starting up again this week, Walega said children should be careful while waiting for the bus in the morning.
“People need to protect themselves,” Walega said. “You need to use insect repellent during peak mosquito hours – from dusk to dawn. Wearing long sleeve shirts and pants will help. People should also remove standing water from outside their homes. As we know, mosquitoes like to lay their eggs there.”
