William "Barry" Hughes

Aug 22, 2025
On August 20, 2025, William "Barry" Hughes peacefully passed away after a long illness. He was born on July 10, 1937, in New Bedford, MA, to Richard T. and Agnes (Craven) Hughes.

Barry was a proud member of the New Bedford High School Class of 1956, where he was voted "Most Fun to Be With"-a distinction that truly reflected his lifelong spirit. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Bryant College, attending classes at night while working full-time.

He served two years of active duty in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Great Sitkin as a signalman, followed by two additional years in the Naval Reserve. Barry then embarked on a long career in local business.

A lifelong boater, he was a devoted member of the New Bedford Yacht Club since 1951, where he also served as Treasurer. Barry was an avid traveler and beachgoer who was often seen at Anthony Beach.

Above all, Barry cherished his family, who were his greatest love and source of pride. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Louise (Hickey) Hughes; his children, Peter Hughes (Helena) of Acushnet, and Kathryn Sullivan (John) of Ipswich; his sisters, Jane Rosa (Dan) and Joan Hughes (Michael Brennick); his grandchildren, Jessica Rogers (Kelsey), Ryan Hughes (Alison), Slater Sullivan, and Tamer Sullivan; and his great-grandson, Charles B. Hughes.
