Rochester native Joshua Winsper earned gold in the javelin and silver in the shot put at the 2017 U.S. Paralympics Track & Field National Championships held this weekend at the University of California - Los Angeles.

The 2016 Old Rochester Regional graduate has a bone growth disorder, achondroplasia, that causes disproportionate height as a child. He competes in the F41 division, meant for adults of short stature,

According to a press release, Winsper placed first in the javelin for the F41 division, with a personal-best toss of 88 feet, seven inches (27.01 meters). He also hit the qualifying standard in the event for the World Para Athletics Championships.

Winsper recorded a mark of 27 feet, ten inches (8.48 meters) in the shot put to place second in the event for the F41 classification.

The placings unfortunately did not lead to an invitation to compete at the World Para Athletic Games, to be held this year in England; when members of the team from the United States was announced, Winsper's name was not among them.
