Women dig for quahogs in Sippican Harbor
May 31, 2017
The Buzzards Bay Coalition held its first "Women in Waders" event on Tuesday.
A group of women took to the seas to dig for quahogs in Sippican Harbor at Sivershell Beach. As none of the women had shellfishing permits, the event was catch and release only.
Cassie Lawson from the coalition was on hand to teach the group different ways to dig up quahogs – whether it be with rakes or bare feet. She also taught them the basic rules of shellfishing, such as the size and amount of quahogs that are allowed to be harvested.
The coalition created the "Women in Waders" program to allow women to explore ways to get up close and personal with nature, in a safe and supportive environment.
