Yard Boss breaks ground on Wind Swept Village

With Wind Swept Village, Todd Rodrigues is creating a new destination in Mattapoisett with a restaurant, office space and apartments.

A Mattapoisett native who now lives in Fairhaven, Rodrigues recently broke ground on the development that, he says, began as a concept on a napkin.

“My dream when I bought this about six years ago,” he said of the property, “was to have a village-style community that gave back to the community, a place people could congregate.”

Rodrigues already owns the landscaping firm Yard Boss. Started 19 years ago in Rochester, he eventually moved the business to the Mattapoisett Industrial Park and later to 81 County Road (Route 6).

From his office, Rodrigues can watch as Wind Swept Village takes shape.

The complex will sit on about two acres of land and have two buildings, one around 14,000 square feet and the other 7,000. Both buildings are designed to house businesses on the first floor with apartments on the second floor.

The exteriors are a slate hue with white trim and meant to have a nautical feel. There will also be a patio area and brick sidewalks in a design meant to evoke a “quaint, warm feeling,” said Rodrigues.

Last week trees were cut on the property to make way for construction, which is estimated to take a year and a half to two years. Rodrigues has received the OK from the Planning Board for the design of the project, but he still needs a special permit from the Zoning Board for the apartments.

Building Inspector Andy Bobola said the permit is required for businesses in the general business district and the Village business district. He also complimented the design.

“It’s a nice project,” Bobola said. “I think it will do well.”

Although the grand opening is still some time away, Rodrigues said he’s already negotiating with several businesses that are looking to open in Wind Swept.

“It’s going to be a hot commodity, I believe,” Rodrigues said. “People are going to want to come to this.”

And if all goes well, this will likely be only the beginning of Rodrigues’ foray into real estate development.

“I want this to be our branding,” he said. “I just truly love to design and create spaces.”
