ORR principal also leading soccer team

Old Rochester Regional High School Principal Mike Devoll took on a second title this year and became the head coach for boys soccer.

“I like to think of it as going back to being the soccer coach,” Devoll said. In 2006, he led the team to win the Division 3 South Sectionals. He has also coached boys soccer in 2002, 2007, and 2008.

Right now, he said he’s focused on blending veteran players with new recruits following last year’s season, when the team won five games, lost three, and tied three.

“It’s difficult to increase a player’s skill, that needs to happen in the off-season,” he said. “I try to work really hard to develop a team mindset, one that’s based on toughness and intensity. I believe that’s a big factor in high school soccer.”

Soccer Captain Robert Magee said he’s seen some changes since Devoll took over for previous coach Erich Carroll. Magee, a senior, is returning for his fourth and final year on the team.

“Our team is definitely getting better. We’re hoping to make the playoffs,” Magee said, adding there’s been more focus on physical fitness.

Devoll echoed Magee's statement: "We should be in the playoffs every season."

For the team, Magee was chosen as captain for his leadership and his lengthy playing career. With 13 years of soccer experience, he said he plans to continue playing when he heads to college next year.

The Bulldogs are finding their way early on in the season following a 1-0 loss on the road to Apponequet Regional High School at Lakeville on Friday, Sept. 6.

The Bulldogs next game is Friday, Sept. 13 against Fairhaven at home.
