Rochester School Committee candidate Meagan Bennett
Rochester native Meagan Bennett says she would put her business acumen to good use on the Rochester Memorial School Committee if elected.
Bennett has been a full time director of sales at a Wareham manufacturing company for 13 years. In her career, she’s managed budgets, employees and customers. Those skills would serve her well on the committee, she said.
“I ensure the company stays profitable and that employees and customers stay happy,” she said. “A school needs to be run like a business. It has stakeholders like one.”
She’s no stranger to the school and has a son attending first grade. Her second son, a three-year-old, will also attend the school. Bennett volunteers weekly in her son’s classroom and is active in the Parent Teacher Organization.
“I feel like I can do more,” she said. “I’m really invested in the school.”
To familiarize herself with the committee she’s been regularly attending meetings.
If elected to the committee, Bennett said she wants to see teachers and students get the support they need. As tri-town officials grapple with increasing costs and less revenues she says its possible to achieve that through financial planning.
“When it comes to budgeting and the business side of the committee’s work, I feel like I can add a lot,” she said.
Some might balk at taking on school committee seat with a full time job and two young children, but not Bennett.
“People ask me if I’m crazy. I feel like we’re a community where everybody does their part, and I’m certainly happy to take my turn,” she said.
