Rochester police chief asks for safety upgrades on Neck Road

At the police chief’s request, Selectmen have asked the town’s highway department to make a troublesome intersection less dangerous.

Police Chief Paul Magee appeared at the board’s Monday, April 28 meeting to say residents near the intersection of North Avenue and Neck Road have complained about traffic there.

Magee noted a pair of accidents there recently was the fault of drivers who didn’t yield to a stop sign. To improve safety he suggested the highway department trim trees at the location.

“It’s a difficult intersection because of the sight lines,” he said.

Magee also said the highway department should repaint faded stop lines on the pavement.

The intersection has two stop signs, both on Neck Road. Drivers on North Avenue are not required to stop. Selectman Naida Paker asked if making the intersection a four-way stop would be justified. Magee said federal highway regulations prevent that.

Magee noted that a number of precautions are already in place, including warning signs on Neck Road and North Avenue before the intersection. Police also increased traffic enforcement in the area. Magee said having the highway department make the proposed changes are an easy way to make the spot safer.

“These are just two more steps that are very inexpensive,” Magee said.

Selectmen unanimously voted to send the request to the highway department.
