Mattapoisett Cubs compete in Pinewood Derby

From the Batmobile to a Pokemon inspired design, Mattapoisett Cub Scouts got creative with their Pinewood Derby racers. BY MATTHEW BERNAT
The boys of Mattapoisett Cub Scout Pack 53 were off to the races on Saturday morning during the annual Pinewood Derby.
Each Cub Scout designed, shaped and painted wooden cars from identical kits with the help of parents. The cars were then raced in three different heats.
Trophies were awarded to the Cubs with the five fastest cars and other categories for design.
“This is my first trophy!” said Calder Eaton, who earned second place. Throughout the heats Calder was an enthusiastic competitor, jumping up and down with each win.
The other winners with the overall fastest times were: Tyler Rocha, first place; Ezra Thompson, third place; and Jed Dure, fourth place.
