Selectmen review capital needs

Sewer projects account for more than $4 million in the total of almost $5 million in capital needs for fiscal year 2016.

On Tuesday, Capital Planning Committee Chair Chuck McCullough presented Selectmen with a brief rundown of the work the committee has done over the past several months.

Besides expanding the sewer network on North Street and Cove Street as well as maintaining and replacing aging water and sewer infrastructure, the committee’s list includes $206,046 for vehicle replacements among several town departments.

There is also $50,000 for recreation needs at Town Beach and the Old Hammondtown School playground and $15,390 for a new voting machine.

The Finance Committee has yet to meet with the Capital Planning Committee to discuss the list. The needs will likely be spread out over regular Town Meeting in May and Special Town Meeting in the fall.

Selectmen were pleased that the needs weren’t bigger than last year and that nothing on the list was unexpected.

“There are no real surprises, which was one of our objectives,” said McCullough.
