Volleyball team earns playoff berth after 8 years
The Old Rochester Regional High School girls volleyball team has come a long way in three years.
Under coach Matt Bisso, the team went from winning just one game three seasons ago, to earning a playoff berth for the first time in eight years.
“It’s been nothing but amazing,” Bisso said. “This has been a wild ride for us and we’ve loved every minute of it.”
Bisso, who has been head coach for four years, said before he signed on the team suffered because finding a coach for the long term was difficult.
“The volleyball program went through a lot of coaches in a short time. The way to build a team that is competitive in the playoffs is to have someone there year to year.”
The team secured a playoff berth two weeks ago with a win against Apponequet.
On Monday night, the team defeated Somerset-Berkley and earned the No. 8 seed in the Volleyball South Division 2 tournament.
In the last set against Somerset Berkley, Zoe Smith served up seven consecutive points to win the game with no need for a fifth set.
Bisso said encouraging students to play starting at a young age has helped boost the team’s skill level.
“It’s about getting the girls to show up freshman year and getting them interested early on. We definitely make the game fun to play,” Bisso said.
The Bulldogs will face off against the No. 9 seed Hingham on Nov. 5 at Old Rochester at 7 p.m.
