Rochester Memorial School continues to see improvement on scores
Although it remains a Level Two school, Rochester Memorial School is moving towards narrowing proficiency gaps in English language arts, math and science scores.
Principal Derek Medeiros discussed the proficiency level students had on standardized tests in 2015 at the Rochester School Committee’s Thursday night meeting. The proficiency level is calculated using a baseline set in 2011. The goals for each year are based on previous years’ test scores, and as schools move closer to 100, they have a more difficult gap to close.
While RMS did not achieve the overall points it needed to move to a Level One school, it did perform in the 78th percentile in the state, explained Medeiros.
“We can see some significant improvement from a couple of years ago until now. If we can sustain what we’re doing, even improve, then we feel we’ll get our building to a Level One status,” he said.
The overall score for the school was 68, but the high needs population exceeded its needs with a 78. Both categories would need at least a 75 to achieve Level One.
School Committee Chair Tina Rood said she was alarmed by some of last year’s scores compared to the state’s expectations, but is happy to see so much improvement this year.
“We are definitely moving toward it,” she said.
