Hillside Motel owner praised for positive changes

After threatening to close down the Hillside Motel in the winter due to numerous violations, Selectmen were pleased to see major improvements to the Route 6 business four months down the line.

Owner Sonal Patel met with Selectmen several times to discuss building and health code violations as well as the persistent use of town services for domestic disturbances, illegal activity and other emergencies.

Since those meetings, Patel said she has been diligent to check on the rooms and to give police a list of customers. She has raised the charge for renting rooms, and said she is learning to be a better judge of character.

At the Selectmen’s meeting on Tuesday night, Town Administrator Mike Gagne said, “Things have gone very well. [Patel has] taken very seriously any of the issues we’ve had discussion on.”

Recent reports from the Board of Health, fire and building inspectors have come back positive as well. The police chief also reported that calls to police and EMS have been low.

“I’ve got to say, you’ve done a really good job, a phenomenal job,” said Selectman Tyler Macallister.

Selectmen said Patel will not need to come before the board again until her permit renewal at the end of the year.
