Tri-town residents beat the heat with cool treats

The orders at Oxford Creamery may not be what one would expect during a spell of hot, sticky August weather.

“We can't make enough egg salad,” said Ken Ackerman, who owns the popular Mattapoisett ice cream and short order restaurant with wife Liz.

When the temperatures and humidity rise, the Ackerman's generally know what to expect. Ken Ackerman said people generally lean towards the lighter dishes.

“The lobster roll's still king,” he said.

Of course, ice cream also sells and it seems customers are trying to cool off with minty flavors. The Ackermans said mint chocolate chip and peppermint stick have been popular licks while the raspberry lime rickies are getting play, too.

With a heat advisory in effect during the day on Thursday and Friday and high temperatures expected through the weekend, Ken Ackerman said people tend to stay away until the temperature cools down later in the afternoon.

One customer who stopped by for a late lunch said his strategy for beating the heat is simple.

“We'll stay on the breeze, stay on the water.”

The breeze at Silvershell Beach is what Glenn Lukowicz, who runs the concession stand, says is his “saving grace” during these heat waves.

While normally food items, such as hotdogs, are a popular choice at the snack stand, Lukowicz said that when it's this hot out, “food is insignificant.”

“Water takes over,” he said. “There are days when I couldn't give water away if it were free, but when it's this hot nobody orders soda.”

Silvershell lifeguard Nicole Mattson said the heat also brings more people to the beach.

“[Thursday] was packed,” she said.

And not only are more people headed to the beach, but more people get in the water to cool down.

“The heat gets parents who don't normally swim into the water,” she said.

When it gets hot in the tri-town, ice cream and the concession stand's slush are two of the best ways to beat the heat.

Sisters Mollie and Harper Osetkowski, 5 and 4 respectively, both tend to favor the minty flavors of ice cream, but their taste in slush is different.

Big sister Mollie likes watermelon, while Harper prefers the blue raspberry.

Blue raspberry is also a favorite of Marion resident Chris Horan, 9, while his sister Meghan, 13, prefers the mango slush. They don't agree on ice cream flavors either.

“I like mint chocolate chip,” Meghan said.

But Chris said he prefers Oreo.

Gabriella Estevez, 4, and big brother Gavin, 6, have slightly more unconventional tastes in ice cream.

“I like orange sherbet with peanut butter sauce,” Gavin said.

Meanwhile, Gabriella prefers a more chocolatey ice cream.

“I like M&Ms and chocolate and chocolate frosting,” she said.

Whatever the flavor, the consensus seems to be that the only way to beat the heat is with something cool.
