In honor of Fire Prevention Week, the Mattapoisett Fire Department held its annual open house at the station on Thursday night.

The fire trucks were out for kids to climb into and there was face painting and crafts. Firefighters also put on a fire demonstration and, demonstrated how the jaws of life on a car.

Firefighters spent the week visiting kindergarteners and first graders to teach them about calling 911 to report a fire and how to stop, drop and roll.

There were handouts available at the open house to educate people on how to prevent fires in the home and games for kids to play to test their knowledge.

“It was a collaborative effort to put this on,” Fire Chief Andy Murray said. “The whole staff comes out and we get volunteers. It's a good turnout.”

While perhaps the demonstration of firefighters putting a fire out may have been the biggest crowd draw of the night, Murray hopes the evening proved to be educational as well.

“The biggest thing we want people to come away with is fire safety,” he said.
