Harbormaster boat the 'victim of a hit and run'
The Mattapoisett Harbormaster’s boat has a big hole in the motor and the culprit is unknown.
“The harbormaster is a victim of a hit and run,” said Jill Simmons, harbormaster.
She said something collided with the boat motor on Sunday, probably between noon and 2 p.m.
Simmons was on the boat after 2 p.m. and noticed the gouge in the motor. She thinks an anchor, boat or scalloper’s equipment may have done the damage, but whatever the case, the person responsible has not come forward.
For the repair, “the whole boat has to come out of the water,” said Simmons.
She said this isn’t the only illegal act of late. Last Friday, someone took a boat beached in a recent storm for a spin. The person, who is unknown, brought it back.
Simmons said she has asked to get cameras to monitor the wharf, but they’re not scheduled to be on the town’s list of capital improvements list until 2018.
In the meantime, she’s not hopeful anyone will admit guilt for the hole in her boat motor.
But, said Simmons, “It sure would be nice if they came forward.”
