Car crashes into water at Ned's Point

Nov 7, 2016

A 19-year-old woman in a Jeep Cherokee drove over the rock barrier and into the harbor at Ned's Point on Monday morning.

No information is being released about the driver at this time, and she was taken to the hospital by Mattapoisett EMS with minor injuries, according to police.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but a first responder on the scene said it looked like "rapid acceleration and poor judgment."

There were at least 19 feet of skid marks in the parking lot leading up to the rocks.

Firefighters secured the scene and placed an absorption material around the SUV to stanch the gas and oil leaking into the water.

The site of the accident is in a shellfishing area, which may be closed temporarily.

Big Wheel Towing and Recovery was called to the scene to remove the vehicle.

Police issued the driver with a citation for operating to endanger and speed greater than reasonable.
